An offbeat charmer, The Pope’s Toilet is a humorous, well-crafted tale with plenty of heart and a poignant social message next at Greens N Grains Deli in Egg Harbor on Thursday, January 7 at 7 pm – free.
Bouncing between moments of humor and gentle drama, this film is set in a small town that is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Pope John Paul II. It’s 1988, and Melo, an Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, expects 50,000 people to attend, and the most humble locals believe that selling food and drink to the multitude will just about make them rich.
Petty smuggler Beto (César Troncoso) thinks he has the best idea of all – he decides he will build a public toilet in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.
Co-produced by Fernando Meirelles (City of God), this film was Uruguay’s submission to the 2008 Oscars.
Starring: Cesar Troncoso, Virginia Mendez, Virginia Ruiz, Mario Silva
Director: César Charlone, Enrique Fernandez
