Björklunden vid Sjön, Swedish for “Birch Grove at the Lake” (but commonly translated to “Birch Forest by the Water”), is a 425-acre estate on the Lake Michigan shore just south of Baileys Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin. A place of great beauty and serenity, the estate was bequeathed to Lawrence University in 1963 by Donald and Winifred Boynton of Highland Park, Illinois.
Following a 2007 expansion project, the splendid two-story, 37,000-square-foot lodge contains a great room, multi-purpose and seminar rooms, dining room and kitchen, as well as 22 guest rooms. There are two lakeside decks, a second-story observation deck, an elevator and a computer lab. The entire facility has wireless Internet access and plenty of parking.
The fee for weddings and receptions is $2,750.

Suite on the Water is an option if you or members of your wedding party want to stay on the water in a beautiful private room in a local home located on Memorial Drive in Sturgeon Bay. The whole home is recently renovated. The upper level offers a room with a private balcony overlooking the water, and has a queen size bed. There is also a luxurious rain-shower head in the private bath, and refrigerator and coffee maker with a small dining table to relax for a snack. On the same level, is second room with a full size bed. The lower level suite also offers a water view with a queen size bed, private bath and a pull out sleeper sofa. The kitchen bar is equipped with a sink, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and dining table. All of the rooms come with WiFi and streaming devices for the television. Guests may use the steam shower, infrared sauna and washer/dryer. The owners, Chris and John have a canoe, kayaks, a sailboat and bicycles available for guests. Jerry Voelker and the Jolly Gents have been performing for almost fifty years. The band has played in the Midwest, Russia, China, Mexico, Europe, Hawaii and on a number of cruises. The five-piece band plays a variety of styles including Czech, German polkas and waltzes, and modern jitterbug and polka masses.
“Our crowd is old and getting older,” says Jerry Voelker, who has led Jerry Voelker & the Jolly Gents for almost five decades. “I doubt I’ll ever see it come back the way it was. We used to play weddings all the time. The last wedding we played for was in Oshkosh. That must be seven or eight years ago. Jim came to Door County after a successful career as set designer for Chicago’s Goodman Theater and he has not stopped creating sets and settings, wall murals and sculpture. Carole’s plants and gardens are a living work of art. The public is welcome to visit during regular gallery hours and the Maronek’s offer the cottages for rent as well as their reception barn.
