The first class session will cover e-mail and is scheduled for Wednesday, March 3. The session will run from 2 – 4 pm and will include hands-on computer work by participants. Library laptop computers will be set-up for a classroom lab.

On Wednesday, March 10 the session will explain and guide students through Facebook.  This 2 to 4 pm class will also include hands-on computer work by participants.

Adult Services Librarian, Laura Kayacan is always available by appointment for one-on-one basic instruction concerning computer use and the Internet.

Each week, when a child completes a book, a librarian will “mark” the reading chart and the child will  put their name on a circle and add it to the library’s caterpillar. We’re hoping to make some very long caterpillars!  If a child reads five books during the month-long program, they will be eligible to submit their name in a drawing to win two tickets to see the performance of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites” at the Weidner Center in Green Bay on Saturday,  January 23. They will also get to attend a “Hungry Caterpillar” Dessert Reception after that 11 am performance.

In this era of frugality, many of us are keeping our vehicles a long time.  InfoSoup, our online library catalog, has a resource with links to information about maintenance schedules, diagnostic and repair data for vehicles built between 1945 and 2009.  Your library card will open the online door to comprehensive auto information when you click on “Auto Repair Information Online” on the homepage. Information includes nearly 800,000 drawings and step-by-step photographs, approximately 83,200 Technical Services Bulletins and recalls; over 99,800 wiring diagrams; labor time guide and estimator, as well as specifications and maintenance schedules.

All this information (and more!) is yours with your library card.  If you don’t have a card, stop in at your local Door County Library with proper ID and fill out a short application form. You’ll have your card in a few minutes. That library card also facilitates the use of our Internet computers and the check-out of books, DVD’s, magazines and… more!

Wanted:  Paperback books. The Friends of Door County Libraries at the Sturgeon Bay library are looking for donations of paperback books for their ongoing book sale. Books can be donated any time the library is open:  Mon – Thu 9 – 9, Fri 9 – 6, Sat 9 – 5. Proceeds from the book sale(s) benefit all branches of the Door County Library.

Families will have fun with the harvest stories that will be read this morning! “Strega Nona’s Harvest” by Tomie dePaola will be a featured book, and, if you haven’t already heard it, “Stone Soup” by Tony Ross.  This is a book every family should hear and borrow from the library to re-read through the years.    It is a simple story, but one that leads to a variety of optimistic thoughts and discussions.  Following the stories, the craft activity will be the creation of a paper bag “stone soup.”

Tuesday, OCTOBER 27

Join Ms. Beth for “Halloween Fun – Both Spooky and Silly” with stories like “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,”  and “The Halloween House.”    Geared for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, Story Time this week will also include the finger puppet plays “Five Little Pumpkins” and “Five Furry Bats.”  Little ones and their parents are welcome to come in costume if they wish.

Wednesday, OCTOBER 28

Families are welcome to the Popcorn Movie Matinee at the library.  “Monster House” is this month’s 90- minute, animated feature film.  In it “a group of kids discover that a neighborhood house is actually a monster. To solve the mystery of the house they must go inside it….”  Free popcorn will be provided, and young viewers might want to bring someone with a hand to hold when the adventure gets spooky.

The International film this month is from Israel and explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the eyes of children.  In “Promises” the filmmaker tells the story of a few children who dared to cross the dividing lines near Jerusalem to meet their young neighbors.  Adults are welcome to view and talk about this 102 minute film.

Monday, NOVEMBER 2

The Eric Carle Caterpillar Reading Program begins today for 0-10 year olds.  Sign up and pick up a reading chart and bookmark at your local Door County Library.  Read one book per week to qualify for a prize drawing and to add your name to the growing caterpillar on the wall!

At several of our libraries this week, photos will be taken that illustrate how our libraries are enjoyed and used by folks of all ages and backgrounds.  We hope to submit some of our best photos to a Wisconsin Library Association Foundation website for universal display later in the month.
