Ray Kapfamer’s Paintings of the Great Door County ‘River’ Now Showing at Charlene’s Gallery Ten in Gills Rock

Artist Ray Kapfamer believes that “Door County lacks only one important feature, a great river!”
In his current body of work he solves that problem by painting the Door County ‘river’ – a moving force made up of the flow of energy manifest in the people who come to enjoy the Peninsula.
“These paintings have been created from pastel studies rendered outdoors at various locations throughout the region,” Kapfamer explains.
There are also field works painted in plein aire and photos that are used in follow up work undertaken in the studio, which serve as reference points along the journey. All are brought together once again to rekindle impressions of the great river that rolls forth in Kapfamer’s resultant series of thematic paintings.
The push and pull of color as taught by master abstractionist Hans Hoffmann and colorist Mark Rothko are reflected in Ray’s landscapes where vivid colors deftly challenge believability.
“Part of my goal” he states, “is not to give away the whole picture to the viewer but leave something for them to complete.”
Ray was born and raised in Northern Wisconsin and has been a professional artist for almost a decade. He maintains a working studio at the ARTGarage in Green Bay. He received his formal education from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) in the early 1980s and continues his education with studies at the UW Milwaukee and workshops at the Peninsula Art School. His most recent and most influential work has been undertaken with master painter Rodger Bechtold.
The exhibit opened on Saturday, August 7 with the Great River exhibition of paintings now on display at Charlene’s Gallery Ten in Gills Rock. At 4 pm Ray presented an outdoor demonstration, creating a plein aire pastel rendering of the Great Door County River along with a talk, providing insights and a guided tour of the Great Door County River, on exhibit through September 9.
