WI State Representatives Bies, Nelson, Soletski, and Van Akkeren and WI Senators Hanson and Cowles are recognized for their leadership on conservation issues based on their score in the Conservation Scorecard 2009-2010.

The Conservation Scorecard, released on June 15, 2010 by Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, records legislators’ votes on conservation-related bills ranging from promoting renewable energy and protecting children from toxics to increasing hunting and recreational opportunities.

On the positive side, 19 pro-conservation bills passed both houses and were signed into law by Governor Doyle. Forty-one legislators, a record number, earned a perfect 100% Conservation Score, including Representatives Nelson, Soletski and Van Akkeren.

The legislature also passed important conservation bills that the conservation community has worked on for several sessions, including an electronic waste recycling bill (SB 107) and a ban on phosphorus in lawn fertilizers (AB 3). Representative Bies and Senator Cowles were named to the Conservation Honor Roll in recognition of their efforts to ensure that AB 3 was signed into law. Senator Hansen was named to the Conservation Honor Roll in recognition of his leadership to reduce pollution contamination in our drinking water in Northeastern Wisconsin. Representative Ted Zigmunt was also recognized as a Pro-Conservation Legislator for having a Conservation Score above 80%.

“We deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness and foresight of Rep. Tom Nelson, Rep. Jim Soletski and Rep. Terry VanAkkeren with their 100% positive voting record addressing WI conservation issues,” says Pat Finder-Stone, RN, community activist and committed conservation voter. “We in the Greater Green Bay Area also appreciate the efforts of Senators Dave Hansen and Rob Cowles, along with Rep. Garey Bies, Rep. Ted Zigmunt and Rep. Al Ott who continue supporting conservation concerns, making Wisconsin a better place to live!”

The Conservation Scorecard is produced by the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters both as a tool to hold legislators accountable to their constituents and as a resource for voters. The legislation is originally vetted by the Conservation Scorecard Advisory Council, an independent and diverse group of citizens. The Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters Board makes the final decision on which bills to include, as well as the Honor Roll and Dishonor recipients.
