Get Outdoors! Whitefish Dunes Photo Contest

Posted on 24. Jun, 2010 by in Nature

Celebrate getting outdoors in Door County through photos of Whitefish Dunes State Park.

Photographers are encouraged to illustrate the Wisconsin State Park System’s new initiative aimed at getting children and families to spend more time outdoors with nature. To encourage this activity, photographers are challenged to capture the natural beauty, unique features and special activities that occur at the park.

There are five categories in which those over 15 years of age may enter photos. Categories include:

  • Plants & Wildlife (wild flowers, trees, animals and insects of the park),
  • General Scenery,
  • Shoreline view (must be of the park’s shoreline either rocky bluffs, Clark Lake, Lake Michigan, sandy beach, Whitefish Creek or water view of the park),
  • Interior view (must be of the park’s forest, wetland, hiking trails, or other inland scenic image),
  • Park Users (must be showing legal use of park property), and
  • Black & White (images can be composed of the before mentioned items).

Those younger than 15 years of age may enter in the Junior Division. Ribbons will be awarded and the grand champion will be awarded a prize.

All photos submitted will be reviewed for a special category – Postcard. Selected photographs from the contest will be used to create new postcard images for the Friends Bookstore. Photographer will receive recognition on the printed postcard and a framed postcard of their winning image.

Submission may be made from July 5 through July 29, 2010. Winning photos will be exhibited in the Nature Center August 21 through September 5. Contest is sponsored by Whitefish Dunes State Park and the Friends of Whitefish Dunes. For complete rules and regulations pick up a photo contest form at the park office or request one by calling 920.823.2400.
