Door County United Way’s “Day of Action” Seeks Your Helping Hands to Benefit Local Organizations, June 19

United Way of Door County invites you to our Annual “Day of Action” on Saturday, June 19, 2010 – a traditional Day of Caring with a twist.
In addition to volunteer projects, there are advocacy projects and call-to-action opportunities. United Way agencies worldwide encourage residents to LIVE UNITED, which asks people to give, advocate and/or volunteer.
“This day is so important to us and the families who need our center. It’s like a big spring cleaning and everyone works together to get the job done,” says Lacy Massart, Executive Director of Door County Child Care Center. “Our staff does daily cleanups but their primary responsibility is caring for the children in a safe environment. Most of the staff also volunteers on the Day of Action because it’s important to them to help out.”
The Day of Action program exists so that Door County residents can donate their time to provide support to non-profit organizations who need a helping hand. By volunteering your time, agencies such as the Community Clinic of Door County, JAK’s Place, and Sunshine House can quickly realize results on long-standing projects.
As an example of an advocacy project, this year Family Services’ Healthy Families will have a “Baby Shower”. They are desperately in need of baby items such as diapers, wipes, rattles, outlet plugs, safety cabinet latches, baby board books, sunscreen, and more! This Baby Shower will be held Monday – Friday from 8 am – 3 pm from June 14 until June 25. Items can be delivered to Sunset School. Please, use the 8th Street entrance.
In the past 13 years, more than twenty human service organizations have benefited from the efforts of the Day of Action volunteers. Projects have included such rewarding tasks as painting interiors, raking playgrounds, washing buses or a variety of cleaning projects.
“We try to match the interests and skills of our volunteers with the needs of the organizations, so it’s a great way for everyone to have fun and gain a real sense of accomplishment,” explains Ruthi Henrichs, Administrative Assistant for United Way of Door County. “The volunteers take away a sense of satisfaction for having benefited the community, and community organizations are able to complete important projects, so everyone benefits.”
The event starts at 8 am with breakfast at Sturgeon Bay High School, donated by McDonald’s. At the breakfast site, participants pick-up their complimentary T-shirts, sharing a few moments with fellow volunteers before heading out to the job sites for the day. Pre-registration for breakfast is strongly encouraged. By 9 am, volunteers will have moved out to their designated site for the day, with the goal of completing their projects between noon and 2:30 pm.
