Door County Cherries and Fish Creek hospitality become the focus of national attention as ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) crowns the White Gull Inn with top honors.

Cherry-Stuffed French Toast

Local chatter underestimated the fan power of a favorite small town dining spot in Fish Creek to win ABC’s Breakfast Challenge. Up against three other breakfast specialties served in much larger city restaurants, the White Gull Inn’s Cherry-Stuffed French Toast took the cake.

The winner was selected in a two- part process. After Saturday’s 7 am GMA broadcast that introduced the four competing recipes, ABC opened up a day of online voting which let viewers and fans endorse their favorite dishes.

It was surprising to see the White Gull Inn open up a big lead right from the start. As of 11:15 am the Gull’s Cherry-Stuffed French Toast held the lead with 3,768 votes. Wings & Waffles, served at the Breakfast Klub in Houston, TX was in 2nd place, with 2,480 votes. The remaining two contenders had much fewer votes, so it looked like the battle lines were clearly drawn. The White Gull was well off the front of the pack with 44% of the vote vs the Breakfast Klub’s 30%.

They held a strong lead throughout the day but at about 4:30 pm the Texans started to narrow the margin and by 6 pm it was getting tense. The percentages had narrowed to a 39% vs 36% gap or a total lead of about 500 votes. By 7 pm when the voting ended, a total of  14,965 votes had been cast with the White Gull Inn remaining ahead with 5,736 votes! The Breakfast Klub came in 2nd with 5,337 votes. The Sunny Point Cafe placed 3rd with 3,044 votes and The Friendly Toast was in 4th place with 852.

But that was only half of the story…
The online votes would make up 50% of the tally with the remiander of the selection process to be determined by the choices of the four GMA judges – Marysol Castro, Bill Weir, Bianna
Golodryga and Ron Claiborne.

They must have liked the flavor and style of Door County Cherries and Chef, Julie Zak’s particular flair for combining them with Wisconsin cream cheese, because this morning they named the White Gull Inn’s Cherry-Stuffed French Toast America’s Best Breakfast!

Probably didn't hurt that GMA co-host Bill Weir is a Wisconsin native and frequent Door County visitor!

That’s true, but they won the popular vote with almost 15,000 people casting ballots in a strictly IP-controlled fashion… What’s your preference for breakfast? Door County Cherry-stuffed French Toast or chicken wings and waffles (yechhh).
