United Way of Door County Endowment Fund Finances Community Programs for Youth, Family and Nutrition

Grant funding for three new programs in Door County that focus on youth, family and nutrition has been awarded to local community action groups.
The United Way of Door County Endowment Fund is made up of monetary gifts that are specifically designated to the Endowment Fund. These gifts are often in the form of memorials or gifts in honor of someone and includes money that is raised at an annual fundraising event. That money is then invested in the Endowment Fund with the Door County Community Foundation.
At the end of each fiscal year, 5% of the fund can be used to finance community projects. Because of generous donations to the fund in 2009, the amount of money available for Endowment Fund Grants for the calendar year 2010 is $3,293, which is $1,200 more than was made available in 2009.
In order to qualify for funding from the Endowment Fund, proposed community projects should be something new and innovative in the county, something that is not typically funded with campaign dollars. The Vision Statement and Mission Statement of United Way of Door County was used as guidelines for distribution of funds.
The recipients for 2010 are: UW-Extension, who is receiving $800 towards expenses for an opening or closing retreat for a new program called “Teen Leadership Door County.” This program will start in the fall of 2010 and will create experiences that will aid in leadership development. This is a collaboration between 4-H Youth Development Programs, Team Leadership Center and Leadership Door County and will encourage skill building, civic engagement and team building.
Feed My People will receive $1,900 towards implementing the Backpack Buddy program at Southern Door Schools. The Backpack Buddy program will provide nutritious snacks to children in low-income homes. Currently, the program is a success at Sawyer, Sunset and Sevastopol Schools and this money is needed in order to expand to Southern Door Schools.
The third recipient is also UW-Extension, who will implement a nutrition program aimed at educating families about the importance of family meal times, and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. Studies show that children who eat with their families four or more times per week eat more fruits and vegetables, more dairy and less fat and sugar. The United Way funding of $350 will provide incentives for participation, which increases the overall effectiveness of the program and improves the chance of success for the children and families.
There is a limited amount of funds remaining for this year. Application forms, along with the Vision and Mission Statements, are available at the United Way office, 57 N. 3rd Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, by calling 920.746.9645, or visiting their website at www.unitedwaydc.com. Proposals should be submitted to the United Way of Door County, Endowment Fund Grants, P.O. Box 223, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.
