“Learn to Think Like a Bluebird” Door County Master Gardeners Association Continuing Education Program, Mar 9

Posted on 23. Feb, 2010 by in Learning

It’s the return of the Bluebird Doctor, Tuesday, March 9 at Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay at 7 pm, free!

Dr Kent Hall will present the Door County Master Gardeners spring program dedicated to one of the region’s favorite seasonal residents.  Come learn to “think like a bluebird.”

Dr. Hall is considered one of the top bluebird conservationists in Wisconsin.  He coordinates a bluebird trail for the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society in Stevens Point, a trail that has produced 14,000 bluebirds in seven years, is home to 1,130 nest boxes, and counts 55 active trail monitors as of last year.

Moreover, he serves as Vice-President and Coordinator of Data Collection and Analysis for the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin (BRAW).  In 2006 he started “Operation Top State” in an effort to become the top producing state for bluebirds in North America by producing 30,000 bluebirds by 2011.  In fact, Wisconsin did become the top producing state in both 2007 and 2008 and set a new national record of 28,244 birds in 2007.

Dr. Hall will discuss the importance of bluebird and other cavity nesting songbird conservation programs (tree swallow, wren, chickadee).   Guests will learn scientific management techniques that will allow them to place nest boxes on their properties to attract these songbirds.

Door County already has an active bluebirding community headed by Roy and Charlotte Lukes.  They will be available to answer questions about developing bluebird trails here in Door County.  There will be nest boxes and mounting posts for sale at the talk.  Dr. Hall will also have copies of the BRAW Informational Packet for sale.  This packet is the most complete guide of its kind produced about bluebirds in North America.  All proceeds will go to the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin.
