Notes from the West Wing: Rep. Bies Introduces two important amendments to budget debate

State Representative Garey Bies

Good afternoon. The Assembly will have floor debate today on the state budget bill and I wanted to give you a heads-up on a couple of amendments I am introducing. First, I will be offering an amendment to redirect a total of $10,000,000 in state funds to the Wisconsin Technical Colleges for worker instruction and training. This influx of supplemental funding will benefit our area by countering increased tech college property tax levies that would result from the Democrats’ budget and will aid in our unemployed citizens’ ability to learn skills that will help them find a new career.

I will also be offering an amendment that will keep the Sturgeon Bay DNR Service Center open. Currently, the budget will close this vital service center and that will greatly hinder our ability to host the many sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts that come to visit here. With tourism so important in this area, and that tourism greatly reliant upon enjoying our natural resources, it is critical to keep this center open.

Hopefully my amendments will gain bi-partisan support and be adopted by the Assembly. As always, I can be reached by e-mail at Rep.Bies@legis.wisconsin.gov or by telephone, toll-free at 1-888-482-0001. You can also visit my website at http://www.legis.state.wi.us/assembly/asm01/news/.
