Local YMCA Selected to Receive Tylenol Keep Moving Grant
The Door County YMCA Northern Door Program Center was one of the 100 YMCA’s out of a field of 400 who recently received a Tylenol Keep Moving Grant to fund a related Tylenol event in support of programming for active older adults. The grant also helps to provide financial assistance to cover membership and program fees for older adult members.
With money received through the Tylenol Keep Moving Grant, the Community Health Fair being held at the Northern Door Program Center on Wednesday, May 20 will include two free fitness classes:
- Senior Strength from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., and
- Twinges in the Hinges water fitness class from11:15 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
The funding from this grant will also sponsor a number of senior memberships and class options that will be given away at the health fair.
Door County YMCA Awarded Grant to Keep Kids Safe in Water
The Door County YMCA recently received a PepsiCo Healthy Living Grant to ensure that children in third and fourth grade in Door County are able to swim, be safe and enjoy being active in and around the water. The goal of the program is to not only expose local youth to one of the best overall body conditioning exercises, but also decrease the number of accidents in the water in Door County.
The“10 yards by 3rd Grade” swim program includes eight 45-minute lessons focusing on basic swimming and safety skills as well as some recreational activities. All local schools were invited to attend this program and over 140 students have participated over the past month including 3rd and 4th graders at Sunrise School, St. Peters Lutheran School and St. John Bosco School. There will also be a program running the last week of May at the Northern Door Program Center for fifty 4th grade students at Gibraltar Schools.
Door County YMCA to Certify Seniors in Northern Door for CPR/AED
Through a recent Kopseker Grant from the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, the Door County YMCA will be working to certify seniors in Northern Door County in CPR/AED. The money received through this grant will provide senior citizens with the opportunity to become certified to help keep fellow Door County citizens alive until more advanced medical services arrive to take over. This can not only help to save lives of Door County residents, but also help to ensure a higher quality of life afterward due to a lower chance of permanent brain damage.
The Door County YMCA believes that this program is important for our residents with Door County having the highest median age of residents in the state of Wisconsin at 42.9 and the number of residents 60 and over in Northern Door County is continuing to increase.
The CPR/AED class will be offered to the community beginning this summer and will run through 2010 certifying nearly eighty senior citizens during this time. Classes will be held at the Northern Door Program Center in Fish Creek.
