Old commercial building is now a home with a view

Most people expect to find an industrial building needing rehab in areas like Milwaukee’s historic Third Ward or Chicago’s south loop.
Colleen McCarty and Tom Utzinger found one on the lake in Baileys Harbor and converted it into an updated residence and gallery.
The two-story building, built in 1919 on the Door County peninsula, once housed dairy and laundry businesses. Pipes protruded from walls and wires dangled from ceilings when the house hunters toured it in 1994.
“This, at the time, was the last thing we wanted. It was like an old factory in the Third Ward. We looked at it and said, ‘My gosh. It’s huge. This is nuts,’” Utzinger says.
